Listed Building Project Newlands

We have the great privilege to be working on a listed Building in the Newlands valley. The owners are keen for a sympathetic restoration that maintains and enhances the traditional character of the house.

The project is a long and patient one accommodating the many twists and turns that working on heritage buildings usually brings.
The project started with preparatory and time-consuming underpinning of fragile cob walls which proved a nail-biting experience for all involved.
We have undertaken stone work features such as the oval chimney stack which are characteristic of the Lakeland building style for the area.
We have restored the damaged and degraded beams using oak of local provenance. The most interesting part of this process was finding and working a tree with a suitably prominent curve for the refurbishment of the impressive cruck beam.
We have used limecrete floors and lime plaster work in order to provide a breathable healthy environment for the home and to maintain the period character.
It has been fascinating and rewarding to see ancient skills and design coming to life once again. We will keep you updated.
